Book Review - The History Of Bees - Maja Lunde

When I was in hospital my mother in law very kindly brought me a book to read.
She picked this of the 'best seller' list.
I wish this book was as nice as her.

Overall, this book was a huge let down.
Spoilers ahead!

This book isn't really about bees, it just uses the plight of bees as a background for a sub-par drama.

The first of three characters we follow is a (not terribly creatively named) William from the 1870's.
He's some self-important, depressed wienie who doesn't give a crap about anyone but himself.
He has a wife who he doesn't care for, a son he doesn't take the time to actually get to know and several daughters he sees as mere inconveniences.
He is basically a piece of trash.

Then there is George from 2007 USA. He doesn't talk to his son and his wife is far to good for him.

Finally we have Tao from 2060's China.
Why does Tao have a son?
Why do any of these people have children?
Well, thankfully her son dies at three years old and doesn't have to deal with inevitably not merting Tao's expectations.

All of these characters are terrible parents, blindly expecting their children to follow in their footsteps and being really bad at communicating.

There is also this dumb insert of trying to make it sound like the book 'The History of Bees' is some sort of important book, like in 'The King In Yellow', except not delightfully done at all.

The author is just a really crappy storyteller and this is a crap book.
She usually writes young adult fiction and I am now worried about the youths who have had to endure her 'work'.

Since I can't really find anything nice to say about this book, here is  my favourite joke about bees:

The Licki Brush

I was so excited for this, I backed the Kickstarter!

It was pitched as a brush you hold in your mouth, for grooming and bonding with your cat in a more cat-like fashion.

I actually licked Hades once when he was struggling to groom his back... he was horrified and wouldn't settle for the rest of the night, lest I lick him again.
Sorry baby.

It is a pink-red silicon, the shade meant to reflect a tongue.

Now for some more shade (as thrown by me).

The 'bristles' a big nodules that are more of a cat 'massager' than a brush.

They are hard and bulky and (with the reduced dexterity of using your face) bumps the poor kitty more than grooms.

Neither of our cats liked it.

If I wanted a shitty pet brush, I'd just buy one (for less money).
I wanted something that actually brushed, that was more like an actual cat tongue.

Something harder to make, harder to clean, but so much nicer for our feline friends!
