Watching Wheatgrass Grow

Before the twins came home, I thought I had covered everything: good quality kitten food, bowls (water and food), toys, cardboard boxes, scratching post, kitty litter, etc.
And I held this belief until I was with PB's family.

We were out walking when their dog Lisa started eating grass.

Grass!

The twins are to be indoor cats, they can't just go out and eat grass!
My dear previous cat was an outside cat and could eat grass whenever, so I just never thought of it as something I might need to provide.
And I know that cats like grass, or the option of grass.

I did some research and found that wheatgrass was fine for cats and easy to grow, so I ordered some seeds.

I followed the wikihow instructions for growing wheatgrass (yes, I used wikihow).
I could have just guessed but I have seen enough episodes of 'Gardening Australia' as a child to know that each plant has different needs.

There wasn't much else on the television during the weekend.

I soaked the seeds for a bit longer than the 30 total hours, because I couldn't be late to work just to plant seeds.

Prepped some shallow soil

Then scattered the seeds on top, keeping them moist.

And it grew really well! It was full size within 10 days.

Verdict: When the twins came home they took to it immediately! I was quite surprised, as they had never seen grass before (inside cats).

Plot twist!
They have been sitting in it and subsequently damaged the grass :/
Whatever makes them happy! XD

But I have a plan!

I re-did some more seeds and used mini pots.
I had a number of them so I could cycle them around and they are too small to sit in.

They love it!

Art Break - Gift for Miss Buttons

I won't see Miss Buttons for a while (solely by distance, not choice) so I wanted to get her something to show that I am always thinking about her.

She recently shared the story of 'The Boy Who Drew Cats' from the Myths and Legends podcast, and it really resonated with me.

So this story is the basis of this project!

I started with a box

I keep almost everything for craft. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

and painted the inside a happy peach colour.

I cut out some 'carpet' from some fleece.

I made a window and Comrade (her cat) from card.

I attached Comrade to the carpet

and attached these to the box.

I also drew some cats.
Note that the window and cat are not against the back, that is so we have room for the gift!
For the gift, I bought Miss Buttons a scarf with cats on it. This scarf is the 'wall'.

Last, a little card to explain this all.

Done!

Hope you like it Miss Buttons! (I won't be there to see your reaction).

The Licki Brush

I was so excited for this, I backed the Kickstarter!

It was pitched as a brush you hold in your mouth, for grooming and bonding with your cat in a more cat-like fashion.

I actually licked Hades once when he was struggling to groom his back... he was horrified and wouldn't settle for the rest of the night, lest I lick him again.
Sorry baby.

It is a pink-red silicon, the shade meant to reflect a tongue.

Now for some more shade (as thrown by me).

The 'bristles' a big nodules that are more of a cat 'massager' than a brush.

They are hard and bulky and (with the reduced dexterity of using your face) bumps the poor kitty more than grooms.

Neither of our cats liked it.

If I wanted a shitty pet brush, I'd just buy one (for less money).
I wanted something that actually brushed, that was more like an actual cat tongue.

Something harder to make, harder to clean, but so much nicer for our feline friends!
